The SCS SERDI Cutting Systemproved its efficiency and versatility, but showed recently some limits on hard and/or large diameter seats. Indeed, in some extreme cases, the associations between a carbide cutting bit and a 8°rake angle is not enough to get a satisfying surface quality on the seat angle.
To satisfy this need, the TRI cutting system comes in addition to the SCS cutting system.
The TRI cutting system is made of 12 bit-holders and one CBN made cutting bit, replacing the traditional tungsten carbide cutting by a triangular CBN bit (Cubic Boron Nitride).
CBN is the second hardest material after synthetic diamond.
It allows to:
- Maintain its cutting properties even at high temperatures (interesting for dry machining as one valve seats machining)
- Maintain a sharp cutting edge during machining, which deteriorates slower than carbide.

Our triangular CBN bit is said “full face”, meaning that the CBN coating is applied on a triangular base of steel, creating 3 cutting edges (composing the three segments of this triangle), which are commutable. When one cutting edge is worn, just tilt the bit of a 120° angle on the bit holder and machine with one of the two remaining edges.
It owns some 11 mm long edges, allowing to machine some seat segments that wide maximum.
This bit only allows re-machining of the seat angle (no possibility to make form-tool machining with this bit). Contrary to the SCS tooling system, the variation of this angle is not given by the cutting bit but by the bit holder. The TRI system is composed of 2 series of 6 bit holders mounting on the tool holders SERDI S5710 and S5731.
